Towner County Community Foundation

April 3rd, 2009 by joann

The Towner County Community Foundation is undergoing a facelift with the help of its new partner, the North Dakota Community Foundation.  “The Towner County Community Foundation has been around for awhile, but our Board recently made a renewed commitment to building the fund”, said Board Member Brad Bergdahl.  “We have seen all too often the results of not having an established local foundation . . . the money leaves our communities”.   The Towner County Community Foundation is a non-profit, tax-exempt corporation authorized under IRS Code 501(c)3, which gives donors to the Foundation a maximum tax deduction for gifts made to the fund.  All gifts are pooled in a single fund and invested as one entity.  Annually, a local board of residents from Towner County will use the income generated from the Foundation to make grants to local projects and organizations.  Those groups that will qualify for grants include any non-profit organization and any government entity, such as a school or park district etc., in Towner County.  The North Dakota Community Foundation acts as an umbrella organization for management of the assets.  All filing of tax forms, managing the investments and all day-to-day operations are handled through NDCF, which creates economies of scale for investing purposes and creates efficiency in operating the Foundation, making it more affordable for smaller communities to operate a professional foundation. Board members will be engaging in a number of public relations and fundraising efforts over the coming months.  One such effort is to raise enough money to qualify for matching funds through the North Dakota Community Foundation.  In the first year of operation, the Board must commit to raise $25,000.  When this goal is reached, $5,000 in matching funds will be added to the total.  In subsequent years, all gifts will be matched dollar-for-dollar up to the first $10,000 with a bonus $5,000 if the community raises $25,000 in any calendar year.  “This really is an opportunity to use outside dollars to build our local foundation”, said Bergdahl, “It’s a real incentive for people to give when they know their gift will be doubled.”

For more information about the Towner County Community Foundation, including how you can become a donor to the Foundation, please contact JoAnn Rodenbiker at 701-266-5572.  Or visit www.ndcf.net , click “view the map” and then on Towner County to make a contribution on-line.

24hr. Pumps

November 29th, 2008 by darrel

After many months work and waiting. We got 24hr. gas pumps that will except any credit card. Hopes were to have it up and running by fall but that didn’t happen. It took to long to find all the pieces that were needed to make it work with the current business. Then after everything showed up it took along time to get the crew up to install the system. But it is up and running now. The Rock Lake Farmers Union is the business that put the system in and it is located on main street in Rock Lake.

Only In A Small Town

June 19th, 2008 by darrel

Only in a small town does the whole community come together to support someone in need. On April 5 a benefit was held for Shane Oakland who is taking treatments for cancer. And on June 15 a benefit was held for Dakota Ray-Price who has Neurofibromatosis. The turn out was unbelievable at both of the benefits. Check out the CaringBridge site to follow along on how they are doing and give them some support.

YOU can make a difference in the life of a child!

June 10th, 2008 by kelly

All children deserve a safe, happy life—including the 513,000 American children in foster care.  Young people in foster care especially need nurturing adults on their side because their own families are in crisis and unable to care for them.  If you would like to make a difference in the life of a child, consider becoming a foster parent.

Adoptive parents are also needed.  Currently there are approximately 1,000 children waiting in Minnesota, North Dakota, and Wisconsin’s foster care system to be adopted.  These children are waiting patiently for their “forever family”.  If you are a caring, patient and flexible person who has a lifestyle that is welcoming and nurturing for children, consider becoming an adoptive parent.

In the Rock Lake area and throughout the nation, foster and adoptive parents are needed!  If you are interested in becoming a foster or adoptive parent, call Towner County Social Services at 701-968-4355, call Kelly Mitchell at 701-477-0525 or visit www.nd.gov.

Dakota Ray-Price Benefit

June 10th, 2008 by kelly

There will be a benefit on Sunday, June 15 from 4:00-7:00 at the Rock Lake City Park for Dakota Ray-Price, son of Charlie and Rachel Price.  Dakota has a genetic disorder called Neurofibromatosis that causes tumors to grow throughout the body.  There will be a picnic meal along with a Silent Auction and Ticket Auction.  All proceeds will go to the family to assist with medical costs and transportation costs to and from Omaha, NE.  Please come out and show your support for the Price family!

Participate and Get THINGS DONE!

June 5th, 2008 by Gayle

lagein-girls-comm-arts-6-08.jpgPictured are a set of sisters who know the value of participating to accomplish projects and develop their personal skills!  Everyone can benefit by helping out their local organizations and communities, and these organizations always have projects or events that need willing and dedicated people to get these things moving!  How many of us have sat in committe meetings and complained about what needs to be done, but then refuse to raise our hand to help out? Great things don’t get done by just wishing and hoping! And who else but US will step up and do what needs to be done?  The younger we start participating and volunteering in our local organizations and community, the better the chance that these behaviors will become a central part of who we are and who we become. All organizations and communities need people to help, so start young like these good-lookin’ sisters from Rocklake!  Get involved!  Step Up!  Get THINGS DONE!

Communication Arts Helps Develop Leaders

June 5th, 2008 by Gayle

jill-jessi-l-comm-arts-6-08.jpgrachael-l-comm-arts-6-08.jpgThe District 3 4-H Communication Arts contest was held in Langdon a couple days ago, and Towner County had three great entries by Rachael, Jill and Jessi L of Rocklake.  Communication Arts is a 4-H program that gives members the opportunity to develop and present a speech or demonstration of their choosing in front of a group.  What a great learning experience!  How many of us, as adults, still experience anxiety and stress when we need to give a report at work to a group of co-workers, or explain to someone how to learn a new skill, or even shy away from speaking up in a meeting?  Public speaking skills are used all the time in all types of career and social situations, and 4-Her’s who learn these skills at a young age are taking the first steps towards becoming valuable, confident leaders not only in their local 4-H clubs, but in their community and their eventual careers.  Communication Arts is a competitive contest at the District level, and pictured are Rachael, who won first place with her Serious Interpretive Reading “Ashes”, and Jill and Jessi, who won Honorable Mention with their commercial “J & J’’s Waves for a Day.”  Great accomplishment!

Safe Food What Is It Worth?

May 28th, 2008 by darrel

Agriculture is the backbone of our community. If it disappears so does our community. So the question is do you want cheap food or safe food? Our state is number one in eleven different crops and second in three other crops. You can get cheap food from other places but safe food comes from here. Once the American farmer & rancher is gone they won’t be back, and if you think fuel prices are high, it isn’t nothing compared to what food prices will be!!!! SUPPORT AGRICLTURE AND HELP KEEP OUR COMMUNITIES ALIVE!!!!
